So as you know I ahve decided to add some home decorating tips to the HM Lounge format because you can't be all fly in the streets and then come home to a disaster or a place that's sooooo unfabulous!!! Well with it being August and all I know that many of you are packing up and shipping off to college. This means a new city, new friends, new place to live and well not every one is lucky enough to end up staying in a fab campus apartment so we must make do with what we have. So here are a few tips from one of my fav websites HGTv.
This is from one of my fav shows on there Design on a Dime and the name should be self explanatory. Check out the before and after pics to see how designer overcame the problems of lack of lightign and space for the two room mates to utilize.
Cramped Dorm Room
Plus here is a few tips of my own to help you get through your months away from home and trust me I know from experience how to decorate a dorm room.
- First and formost if you can pick your roomate please do!! The worst thing in the world is being a neat person and ending up with a roommate that is a slob! Even if you think you know someone you really don't know them until it's time to live with them (this goes for boyfriends also)
- Most of the newer dorms that are being built now have some type of style to them but for those of you who are stuck in the old spots with concreate walls a simple fix for that if going to your local arts and crafts store and getting a chic inexpensive material and double sided tape or tacks depending on your wall material. Hang material from the ceiling to the floor to create a fab backdrop.
- Futons are your friend!!! With so many creative futon covers you can go to a website like eBay and find something that suits your style perfectly. If you're stuck with a twin bed don't pass up places like Ikea for duvet covers for your comforter, it gives you much more flexibility for your bed linens at an fraction of the cost of other places
- Flea markets are you friend.......another man's trash just may be the treasure that you are looking for. Especially for those of you with a eclectic taste this is a perfect place to find that lamp, or fab accessory to complete your new room.
- Please pay attention to this one because this has got to be my number one tip of all time!!! KEEP YOUR DAMN ROOM CLEAN!!! The worst thing abotu these little tiny ass rooms is when they are dirty. Please put forth the effort to amke sure that your little spot is clean because not only will it look fab you'll be able to find things easily and you won't be embarrased to bring people back to your room.
